About Como
The city of Como is a tourist visiting magnate, sitting on the southern tip of Lake Como, surrounded by the Alps, just a short trip from the Italy-Swiss border. Como Calcio, however, doesn't so much live up to the geographical surroundings, but at the start of the 2024-25 season, Serie A football will be once again played there, with international flair.
Como football club 1907 was founded over 100 years ago and mostly spent its years in Italy's lower divisions, for some years out of the professional divisions. The club last played first division football in the early 80's. But relegation came toward the end of the decade and it hit Como hard and fast, as the club fell all the way down to Serie C.
Since the 21st Century, financial difficulties sent Como twice into bankruptcy, being finally saved by an Indonesian group in 2019, when Como was playing in Serie D. Since then, its rise has been fast, as the club secured Serie A promotion on the last day of the 2023-24 season, finishing 2nd in Serie B.
And by the way, today some of Como's shareholders include former Arsenal greats Thierry Henry and Cesc Fàbregas.
The later actually played for Como during the 2022-23 season in Serie B, after which he called quits on his playing career and was later named first team assistant coach.
When you look at Como's other notable former players, no big names will jump upfront, and there are also no one-club legendary names to point out. However, few notable names have played for the club, most of them for a season or two: Former Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini played for Como during the 1993-94 season, while on loan from Milan. Former Juventus and Napoli striker Nicola Amoruso made 14 appearances for the club in 2003, scoring 6 goals. Former midfielder Benito Carbone, who, among others also played for Napoli, Inter, Aston Villa and Torino, appeared in 22 matches wearing the Como blue in 2002-03 and scored 2 goals. And Uruguay forward Daniel Fonseca called quits on his career while playing for Como in 2002-23, after playing for Napoli, Roma, Juventus and River Plate. However, Fonseca only played for Como Twice.
Como play its home matches in 13,602-seat, Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, who sits on Lake Como Shores.
