Las Vegas is a very special tourist venue, known throughout the world as a center of non-stop gambling, of fabulous entertainment and an amazing array of hotels and tourist attractions. Las Vegas is the largest American city to be founded in the twentieth century, originally as a stop along the east-west railroad line. Later it was to be known as the “Gateway to the Hoover Dam” before the rather tawdry element of its history was transformed into today’s reality – the entertainment capital of the world.
It would be sad for anyone to visit Las Vegas and not see for himself some of the natural wonders of the world that are just a short trip away – by bus, by plane or if you feel really adventurous by helicopter. The Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam are an amazing spectacle whether seen from the air or in the case of the Canyon by land based touring. This makes for an absorbing trip which can either be there and back in a day or extended for an overnight stop. There are many different options of out-of-town tours available not far from the city center.
Gambling apart – and it’s not compulsory! – there is some great entertainment going on in Las Vegas that you will certainly want to sample. There are shows featuring some of the biggest names in show business showing two and sometimes three times a night. In addition just walking the Strip and seeing the displays outside the big hotels is entertainment in itself.
Las Vegas is not represented in any of the major sporting leagues but is often the home of major individual events including many big boxing matches which are shown to an exclusive audience and then beamed around the world.
