About Madrid
Madrid is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world and one that no discerning tourist would want to omit from his itinerary. Whilst it is modern and thriving as befits the capital of Spain, it has managed to preserve the look and feel of many of its most historic neighborhoods and streets. On any visit you should be expecting to see such gems as the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Royal Theatre including the Opera House which dates from 1850, the Buen Retiro Park which was founded in 1631, the National Library and a large number of museums. Most notable of these is the Golden Triangle of Art in the Paseo del Prado which includes the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
Turning from history to sport, Madrid is home to two football clubs who have each brought enormous distinction to the City Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid, selected as the best team of the 20th century play at the Santiago Bernabeu and their rivals Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Any football follower will want to book a seat for a game in either or both of these two UEFA 5-star stadia. Real Madrid, which is a complete sporting club, also maintains a leading basketball team which has won thirty Spanish league championships and eight Euroleague titles.
Bullfighting is decried by many for its apparent cruelty but for "aficionados" Madrid has the largest bullring in Spain at Las Ventas with a seating capacity nearing 25,000. You can catch a bullfight between March and October.
Culturally Madrid has much to offer. The Auditorio Nacional de Musica is home to the Spanish National Orchestra among others including leading international orchestras. Just in front of the Royal Palace is the Teatro Real, the centre of opera in the city, offering seventeen different operas each year as well as three ballets and other recitals. You will also be able to sample traditional Spanish music as well as a flourishing alternative cultural scene.
Those in search of nightlife will not be disappointed. You can choose from Tapas bars, cocktail bars, clubs, jazz lounges, live music venues, flamenco theatres – every taste is catered to. However be prepared to reset your clocks – body clocks and timekeepers. In Madrid nightlife means just that – people tend to go out very late at night and stay till early in the morning.
Whatever your interest – history, culture, sport or fine dining – make Madrid your destination and just have a holiday experience to cap them all.
