About Paris
Paris is without doubt one of the great cities of the Western world and nothing seems able to detract from its charm and grace. Paris is the city of love, romance and intrigue. Paris is the city of great fashion houses and designer boutiques. Paris is a city of imposing monuments, an immense range of cultural activities and world famous landmarks. Where else could match Paris’s famous café culture and the quality of its restaurants?
Paris has experienced revolution and siege and indeed occupation and liberation. However, although the human cost of occupation were many and profound, the city did not encounter the kind of aerial barrage experienced by cities such as London or Warsaw. Today’s city is fundamentally that inspired by the vision of Georges Eugène Haussmann in the nineteenth century. He demolished medieval neighbourhoods and in their place built wide avenues, parks and squares, brought the suburbs surrounding Paris into the city and constructed new sewers, fountains and aqueducts.
So what are the “musts” for a first time visitor to Paris? Perhaps the best piece of advice is to add at least one if not two days to your planned itinerary because you will find so much that you will want to see and do. Allow plenty of time for shopping and dining out, book yourself a boat trip down the Seine and a coach tour to the historic and magnificent Palace of Versailles which is about forty minutes’ drive outside of Paris. Leave time for a stroll by the river and for a walk up the Champs-Élysées. The Luxembourg Gardens are an oasis of peace and quiet in the big city, ideal even in mid-winter sunshine.
Many people find the best way to get to know the immensity of choice that is Paris is to buy a ticket on a hop on hop off bus tour which in just over two hours, if you stay on the whole time. Do that the first day and then start working out your schedule for the rest of your holiday. It certainly would pay to book well in advance for the Eiffel Tower, especially in the summer time, as waiting in the long lines could eat up a great deal of your precious time.
There are fascinating and world famous museums and galleries in the city perhaps the best known is the Louvre, one of the largest museums in the Western world – look out for the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo and much more. But this is but one of many including the Musée d'Orsay, the Pompidou Centre and the City of Science.
Paris is also the centre for musical events and some great sport – including rugby, football (see if you can catch a game at Paris Saint-Germain) and the French Open tennis tournament.
