About Milan
Milan
Milan is the second most populous city in Italy and the capital of the Lombardy region. If we include the wide urban area best described as Greater Milan, there is a resident population in excess of five million and it is also a city that is a hub for business and for tourism. Milan has the third largest economy among EU cities (after London and Paris) and the largest among European non-capital cities.
The city has been conquered and reconquered many times. Founded by Celts known as Insubres, it fell under Roman rule to be known as Mediolanum and for around 120 years was capital of the Western Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages, Milan flourished as a commercial and banking center. Over the following centuries, Milan came under the domination of France, Habsburg Spain, and Austria, until 1859 when the city joined the rising Kingdom of Italy. During the early 1900s, Milan led the industrialization process of the young nation. Milan felt the brunt of a harsh Nazi occupation during WWII and became the main centre of the Italian Resistance.
So what is the special attraction of Milan for the would-be tourist? In fact there are many. Whilst the business traveller would see Milan as the home of Italy’s stock exchange, an industrial powerhouse and the hub of Italy’s fashion industry, others may seek an opportunity to visit Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper”, to sample many other art collections both old and new, to obtain a ticket for the world famous opera house La Scala or to cheer on one of the city’s two renowned football teams AC Milan and Inter Milan in San Siro stadium.
At the heart of the city lies the Duomo, the grand Gothic cathedral that symbolises so much of the city, both past and present. Constructed from pink Candoglia marble, it was 600 years in the making, and its pearly white façade is adorned with 135 spires and 3400 statues. The equally impressive, punctuated by the largest stained-glass windows in Christendom, while in the crypt saintly Carlo Borromeo is interred in a rock-crystal casket.
Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper (Il Cenacle) is hidden away on a wall of the refectory adjoining the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie. Depicting Christ and his disciples at the dramatic moment when Christ reveals he's aware of his betrayal, it's a masterful psychological study and one of the world's most iconic images. To see it you must book in advance or sign up for a guided city tour.
