About VfB Stuttgart
Unlike most German major cities, Stuttgart isn't spread around a large, flat basin. Rather, it is sprawled on several hills as well as valleys, mainly around the Neckar River. The city pride itself on being a center of modernity and innovation, often ranks among the best cities to live in in Europe. For 130 years, VfB Stuttgart is one of the local icons, just like Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
The club was established as a rugby club, who later added football. In 1922, it merged with another local club, to form Verein für Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart 1893 e. V. (Association for Movement Games Stuttgart 1893).
The club was doing really well in the first decades, winning some regional championships. Including national titles in 1950 and 1952. Stuttgart was one of the founding clubs of the Bundesliga in 1963 and since has won 3 national championships, the last in the 2006-07 season.
There were some exciting times in Stuttgart. One occurred between 1995-1997, when the club couldn't bring itself to win the Bundesliga tile, only a DFB Pokal, as much to do with a not-very-stable defense, but its offense was creating wonders, as it was composed of Bulgarian playmaker Krassimir Balakov and forwards Fredi Bobic and Giovane Elber. Stuttgart played some of the most creative, free-flowing football in Germany and goals came by bundles. Balakov made 298 appearances for the club, scoring 73 goals, Bobic played 182 times, scoring 86 times, while Elber made 87 appearances, scoring 41 goals.
The magic returned in 2006-07, and this time with a Bundesliga title, as Stuttgart was led by Mario Gomez, Sami Khedira, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Timo Hildebrand, Cacau, Christian Gentner and Serdar Tasci.
Along the years, Stuttgart, or Die Roten (the reds), or Die Schwaben (after Swabia region in southwestern Germany) has established a fine youth academy. Among the many players that have graduated from its academy, one can name Guido Buchwald (387 appearances, 45 goals between 1983-1994) Goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand (296 matches between 1999-2007) Jurgen Klinsmann (156 appearances, 79 goals between 1984-1989) and Timo Werner (95 appearances, 13 goals between 2013-2016).
VfB Stuttgart play its home matches in 60,449-seat state of the art MHPArena, formally Mercedes-Benz Arena.
