About Union Berlin
Everything about FC Union Berlin is unusual: its history, the stadium, the fans, the way the club is run and the surprising success it has achieved during recent seasons. And yet, Union Berlin represents values that used to matter in football: loyalty, community, hard work and romanticism. And it never lost track of what is really important: its fans.
Union's story is so unique, that up to a few years ago, when it was still playing in the 2Bundesliga, quit many of Berliners preferred to go to its home matches rather than to Hertha Berlin's. "It's the people's club and it's about enjoying the atmosphere", they said, "Thats the way football should be".
The club was established as a merge of two clubs in 1906. After World War II the club went through different name changes in (then) East Germany, before emerging as 1. FC Union Berlin in 1966. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, Union was placed in the third division. After some turbulence, especially financially, the club got promoted to 2Bundesliga after the 2008-09 season. Before the start of the 2018-19 season, the club hired Swiss Urs Fischer as coach. Nothing has been the same since, as Union got promoted to the Bundesliga by the end of the season and Berliners had themselves a derby.
It didn't take long to find out who is the best team in Germany's capital, as Union hit the ground running and Hertha sank lower with each passing year. By 2021-22, Union was playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League, the UEFA Europa League in 2022-23 and the UEFA Champions League in 2023-24. Heartha, meanwhile, got relegated to 2Bundesliga.
But our story doesn't end here. When one is on his way to Union's Stadion An der Alten Försterei (Stadium at the old forester's house) he will enjoy the celebration of the fans, with dozens of beer and hotdog stands erected long before kick-off time. And that is not all. By 2003 some tenths of fans let themselves into the stadium to celebrate Christmas. The event (Weihnachtssingen) is a Berlin institution those days, with 30,000 people attending, players and management included, and it is well marked on the to do list of visitors to the city. It became so popular, that it was copied by other clubs in Germany.
Then there was the story where in 2014, in preparation for the Euro that was held in Germany, the club itself invited fans to bring sofas inside the stadium and watch the tournament. More than 800 sofas turned out for the celebration.
And then there is the story about the stadium's renovation in 2009. But the club didn't have the proper resources, so over 2,000 fans donated 140,000 work hours to make it happen.
Union Berlin has announced its plans to renovate the 22,012-seat stadium by the end of the 2023-24 season, and move into Berlin's Olympiastadion for the time being.
Yes, 1. FC Union Berlin has proven that football, commercialism and all, can remain what it used to be, what it should be. Because the club has never forgotten the most important element: its fans. And those, in return, has never forgotten the most important element about the club: "Our love. Our team. Our pride. Our club", as their chant goes.
So you are invited in. Come join the celebration.
