About South Africa
There was rugby in South Africa before Invictus, the movie made by Clint Eastwood and based on true events, of the South Africa rugby union national team winning the 1995 Rugby World Cup, a tournament played on home soil. But that team, getting an automatic bid to participate in the tournament as a host country, was not supposed to go all the way.
Only five years removed from Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and barely a year after his election as the first black president in the country’s history, the movie dealt with the beginning of a healing and unifying process made solely by and for the love of the game. It is the power of a game in part of a continent mad about football, South Africa included, but also stands alone in its pride and joy regarding the game of rugby. And to drive another point home, it was the first Rugby World Cup in which South Africa participated in, after being banned from the first two tournaments (the first one took place in 1987) due to anti-apartheid boycott. And the win in the final match was against – no less – the mighty All Blacks of New Zealand.
Like most Pacific countries, rugby was first played in South Africa at the end of the 19th century due to British influence. The nickname Springbok was originated during the national team’s first tour of 1906 of the British isles. During the 60’s and the 70’s, South Africa mainly toured New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, as sports activities, like all international relations, became scares due to apartheid rules. The country went into total isolation regarding its sports activities between 1985-1991. And then came that miracle team of 1995 and Mandela stepping into the playing field with the team’s cap and jersey on, a mixed crowed of whites and blacks in the stands of Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg and the stunning, extra time, 15-12 victory over New Zealand.
In 2007, South Africa regained its title as World Cup holder after a win the final over England. In addition, the country has won the Tri-Nations Championship three times but was unable to win the Rugby Championship, which is played from 2012 on.
The governing body of rugby in South Africa is the South Africa Rugby Union, who made it a point to emphasize growth and patriotism of rugby as a way of life. As so, there are already 10 million active rugby players in the country, roughly one quarter of the entire population.
