About RC Strasbourg
It’s a story of resurrection, no less. There are simply no other words to describe how Strasburg – full name Racing Club (RC for short) de Strasbourg Alsace – has risen from the dead, literally, where football is not even played on a professional level, and made its way back to France Ligue 1. The journey lasted nine years. On second thought, it was much longer.
Strasburg was founded in 1906 in the Alsace region, very close to the Rain river and very close to the boarder with Germany. As such, it was torn apart between German and French nationalities every time the region went back and forth between the two states.
Strasburg knew some success during its history, wining the Coupe de France in 1951, 1966 and 2001 and the Coupe de la Ligue in 1997 and 2005.
During the second part of the 80’s and later on in the 90’s, Strasburg had a nice run in European competition, playing the likes of Liverpool, Inter, AC Milan and Celtic rangers in the UEFA Cup.
In between it won Ligue 1 title in 1997 and from time to time got itself relegated to Ligue 2 and knew financial difficulties because it could not have sustained stability from its management. The situation was so bad, that no club president lasted too long in his position and the post kept switching hands from local businessmen to investors. In 1997, for instance, the same year the club won the Coupe de la Ligue, it was relegated.
Decades of un-proper financial management had finally caught up with the club, as it went into liquidation in 2011 and was forced to drop all the way to France’s 5th tier, where clubs are not professional and matches are often played on a regional basis is small villages. Slowly, Strasburg was able to pull itself together and started the long, hard climb back. Promotion to Ligue 1 was finally achieved on the last match of the 2017-18 season, after a long absence that lasted for nine years.
And when the good times come knocking, Strasburg’s home jersey for the 2017-18 season was vetoed the premier jersey design for the French Ligue 1 by the public.
RC Strasburg play its home matches in Stade de la Meinau, a 29,230-seat sports venue that draw on average a loyal and devoted crowd bigger than that of some of Ligue 1 clubs while the team was in the lower divisions.
René Hauss, who played his entire career for the club, is Strasburg’s all-time appearance leader, with 580 matches between 1949-1969. The leading goal scorer is German striker Oskar Rohr, who scored 118 goals in 136 matches between 1934-1939.
