About New York Yankees
For those unfamiliar with major American professional sport, notably baseball, one team is probably known above all others and that is the name of the New York Yankees who are undeniably one of the most successful sports clubs in the world. The Club had its origins in Baltimore but in two years had moved to New York, initially as the New York Highlanders but known as the Yankees since 1913. The team's home games were played at Yankee Stadium from 1923 to 1973 and from 1976 to 2008. In 2009, they moved into a new ballpark of the same name after the previous venue closed. The team is perennially among the leaders in MLB attendance—in 2011, the Yankees had the second-highest attendance.
Legendary names have played for the Yankees over the years including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle. Babe Ruth achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the Yankees. Ruth established many MLB batting (and some pitching) records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164) the latter two still stand today. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time.
Joe DiMaggio nicknamed "Joltin' Joe" and "The Yankee Clipper",played his entire 13-year career for the New York Yankees. He is perhaps best known for his 56-game hitting streak (May 15 – July 16, 1941), a record that still stands. During his tenure with the Yankees, the club won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships. He was voted the sport's greatest living player in a poll taken during the baseball centennial year of 1969.
Mickey Mantle played as a center fielder and first baseman, from 1951 through 1968. Mantle was one of the best players and sluggers, and is regarded by many as the greatest switch hitter in baseball history.
