About FC Nantes
Football Club de Nantes, known more usually just as Nantes comes from the town of the same name which is situated in the Pays de la Loire region of France. Nantes was actually formed during World War II when several local clubs combined to form one big club. Throughout its history, Nantes has been known for its individualistic style of play known as jeu à la nantaise (the Nantes way) and for its team spirit.
It was not until 1963 that Nantes gained entry to the top division in French football. However since then Nantes has had a record of being one of the most successful clubs in France, having won eight Ligue 1 titles, three Coupe de France wins, as well as one Coupe de la Ligue victory.
The first two Ligue 1 titles were not long in coming, firstly in 1964-65 and in the subsequent 1965-66 seasons. Four more titles followed in the next two decades: 1973, 1977, 1980 and 1983. In 1979, Nantes won the Coupe de France for the first time in in 1979 against Auxerre with a 4–1 victory after extra time. Eric Pécout made sure he would always be remembered by Nantes supporters when he scored a hat-trick in the match. Nantes were on the verge of a historic Cup and League double in 1983 playing against the mighty Paris Saint Germain. Despite a spectacular goal by Nantes striker José Touré, PSG ran out winners 3-2.
Two more Ligue 1 titles followed in 1994-95 and 2000-01 and a third Coupe de France in May 2000 when FC Nantes Atlantique as the Club were called during this period defeated Calais by 2-1, two goals by Antoine Siberski including a penalty in the last minute of normal time cancelling out the opening goal by Calais’ Jerome Dutitre.
Nantes has always been known for its youth system which has produced some remarkable talent in its time. Spotlighting some of these players: Marcel Desailly who went on to play for Marseilles, AC Roma and Chelsea and was a prominent member of the French football team Didier Deschamps who played for Chelsea and Juventus and is now the manager of the French national team,Mickaël Landreau a goalkeeper who had more than 335 appearances for Nantes before going on to play for Paris St Germain French international Claude Makélélé who went on to play for Real Madrid and Chesea and Christian Karembeu who won the Champions League in 1998 and 2000 with Real Madrid.
Nantes did not have an outstanding season in 2014-15 finishing in 14th place with 45 points. This disappointment is reflected in a lack of striking power with the leading goal scorer being Jordan Veretout with a mere seven goals in all competitions.
