About Middlesbrough FC
For those who are unfamiliar with English geography, Middlesbrough is a large industrial town on the south bank of the River Tees in the county of Yorkshire and are one of many such towns to have a football club that won passionate support from its local supporters and in the case of Middlesbrough FC can date back historically from 1876 and from 1899 as a permanent professional club. Middlesbrough’s home ground since 1995 has been the Riverside Stadium having previously played at Ayresome Park for 92 years since 1903.
Middlesbrough were one of the clubs to play in the Premier League from its inception in 1992 having joined the former top division the First Division in 1902 where they stayed for an initial burst of 22 years. The greatest prize has eluded them – their highest place on the ladder being third place in 1913-14 and in all their long history they have only spent two football seasons out of the top two tiers of English football.
The three points deducted from Middlesbrough’s tally for not fulfilling their fixture against Blackburn Rovers were the key to their relegation at the end of the 1996-97 season. The Club bounced straight back the following season and spent 11 seasons in the Premier League before again facing the drop in 2009. The next seven years were spent in the Championship before second place in 2015-16 saw them back in the top flight for 2016-17.
In all this time Middlesbrough’s win in the League Cup in 2004 provided their first and only major trophy although they did reach the 2006 UEFA Cup Final, where they were beaten by Spanish side Sevilla. The club normally plays in red and white and have had a variety of crests over the years, the latest –introduced in 2007 – shows what in the language of heraldry is a “lion rampant”.
Looking now at some of the great personalities who have been associated with Middlesbrough, pride of place must go to Bryan Robson who having finished his long career with Manchester United became player manager of the club and had a dream start winning them promotion in his first year in the job. He was to stay with Middlesbrough until 2001 and brought many great names to the Riverside.
Brazilian Juninho Paulista had two spells with Middlesbrough and was exceptionally popular. Known as "The Little Fella" or "TLF", he is regarded as the greatest player in Middlesbrough's history and a man of great humility and passion who would play football with children on the street and was reduced to tears at the Club’s relegation.
Paul Merson is normally associated with his years at Arsenal but when his personal problems made him damaged goods, one season with Middlesbrough saw a series of brilliant displays that secured promotion back to the Premier League.
