About Hertha Berlin
Hertha BSC (Berliner Sport Club) was founded in 1892 and
named after the riverboat the club was founded on (true story). The club's blue
and white uniforms also relay on the boat's colors (also a true story). Since Hertha
is a women’s name, that’s why the club carries the nickname “die alte Dame” - old Lady.
The Old Lady won back-to-back pre-Bundesliga German
championships in 1930 & 1931. In 1963 Hertha was part of the inaugural
Bundesliga, only to be kicked out of the league in 1965 for bribing opponents’
players. In 1971 another scandal followed, and the outcomes of the "Bundesliga
Skandal" were a relegation. Another one came in 1980 and six years later
it was down to the 3rd division.
The German unification brought Hertha back to life, although
it wasn't until 1998 that the team got back to the Bundesliga and captured a
place in the Champions League in 1999/00. It was a glory time, but also a cause
for the downfall that was about to happen. Hertha spent big money on players in
its desire to become one of the Bundesliga's elite clubs. The massive
investments would cause financial burden for years to come. The debt that
reached tens of millions of Euros almost caused the club to declare bankruptcy
and to lose the Bundesliga license. The outcome was a necessity to sell the few
stars the club had, and relegations in 2010 and 2012. IN addition, over the
years, Hertha has been very inconsistent in its play and results, also as far
as recruiting leading players to come and play in Berlin.
After Hertha was back in the Bundesliga, the club tried to
build a successfully path by relaying on academy graduate and reaching out to
the city's immigrant population as supporters.
Hertha play in the huge, historic 74,000 seat Olympiastadiom,
therefore it has difficulties to sell out matches, other than notable matches
such as Bayern Munich. Hertha plans to build a smaller, more home-like new
stadium, but it has difficulties raising the necessary capita.
Over the years the club has developed kind of a rivalry with
FC Union Berlin, although the latter played in the Eastern German football
league during the Cold war and plays in Germany's lower division since. Hertha
actually has a rivalry with Schalke 04, although the Roar valley team's
supporters hate more their close rivals BVB than Hertha. Some of them don’t
even know about the rivalry with Hertha.
Notable former Hertha Berlin players include Otto Rehhagel
(who later managed the club), Marcelinho, Arne Friedrich and the Boateng
brothers, Jerome and Kevin-Prince.
Hungarian Pal Dardai is Hertha’s most capped player, having
made 366 appearances for the club between 1997 and 2011. Michael Preetz is the
club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 93 league goals between 1996 and 2003.
