About Fulham FC
Craven Cottage, one of the oldest football stadiums in England, is going through some changes. The home of Fulham FC, the oldest established football club in London, will go through a development stage that will increase its capacity from 25,678 to 29,600 seats. And not only this, but for the first time in over a century, the club will install a public riverside walkway behind the Riverside Stand, incorporating green and nature elements of River Thames into what is now a see-only area. The development will come at a cost of 100 million GBP.
In all, its an exciting time to visit Fulham FC, after a long period of mediocrity. In 2013, the club was purchased by Pakistan-American billionaire Shahid Khan, who also own the Jacksonville Jaguars of the American Football League. The man known as “Shad” is never short of public relations and creative ideas, as he has demonstrated in the United States and redeveloping the stadium is just the beginning.
The establishment of Fulham in 1879 was due to a joint decision by a school teacher and a priest, who desired to form a football club for the benefit of boys in the Fulham neighborhood of London. After several years of playing, the club moved to new Craven Cottage in 1896 and has remained there ever since. Fifty some years on, Fulham was promoted to the First Division for the first time in 1949-50.
There is really not much to tell for the decades to come, as Fulham bumped from First to the Third division, back to the Second and so on. The only notable event was a FA Cup Final match in 1975, which it lost to West Ham United. In between, some fantastic players played in the white shirts, such as Johnny Haynes, George Cohen, Jim Langley, Alan Mullery, Bobby Robson and Rodney Marsh. Later on came 1966 world Cup winner and England captain Bobby Moore and Manchester United legend George Best, although they were on the downside of their careers.
The 80’s and the 90’s reflect hard times for the club, as financial burdens almost drove it to extinction. It was once saved by former players and local businessmen, whoo took matters under their hand. The club may have continued functioning, but results on the pitch were poor, as the club was forced to sell its leading players and it dropped (again) to the Third Division. In 1997, the club was sold to Mohamed Al Fayed, who promised a return to the Premier League within five years. In order to achieve that, he appointed Kevin Kegan as manager. Keegan took the club all the way to the championship before he was appointed England manager. In all, it took four years, after an absence of 33 seasons.
Fulham’s greatest achievement came in 2008-09, when, under Roy Hodgson, the club rode all the way to UEFA Europe League Final, where it lost to Atletico Madrid.
London neighbors Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers are Fulham’s biggest rivals. Johnny Haynes, who is considered to be Fulham’s best ever player and who’s statue is outside Craven Cottage, is the club’s all-time appearance leader, with 594 matches between 1952-1970. Gordon Davies is the all-time goal scorer with 178 goals between 1978-1984 and 1986-1991.
As for the stands, some of Fulham’s famous supporters include actors Margot Robbie, Hugh Grant, Daniel Radcliffe, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Chaplin, as well as singers Ralph McTell, Dave Parsons, Sade and Dusty Springfield. The late Michael Jackson was also a fan.
