About England
The regular schedule for the England rugby team is to play four international matches against teams from the Southern Hemisphere during October and November followed by Six Nations matches in the early spring months. The summit of fixtures is the Rugby World Cup which is played every four years. England have won the World Cup just once in 2003 but have disappointed since then, with the worst being their failure to move on from the initial rounds in 2015. Eddie Jones, an Australian, was then appointed as their new coach who has achieved a remarkable turnaround and at to date has seen his team achieve a Six Nations Grand Slam, a whitewash against Australia and three wins in the Autumn Internationals.
The Six Nations Championship reflects the peak of Northern Hemisphere which is to say European Rugby Union. Originally the Home Championship featuring England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, it became the Five Nations Championship with the addition of France for most of the years between 1910 and 1999. Italy is the latest nation to be represented and with its arrival, the Six Nations Championship was created.
England who are the current champions have been the most successful team in the Championship under its various guises. They hold the record for outright wins of the Home Nations, Five Nations and Six Nations tournaments, with 27 titles, although Wales follow closely with 26 outright wins with the addition of 12 shared victories to England's 10. It should be pointed out that such superiority should flow from having a larger population, more clubs and more players to choose from certainly than the other home nations. Perhaps that is why beating England means so much to the other teams!
Here are some of the great names who have captained England over the years. Martin Johnson is perhaps best remembered as the captain when England won the World Cup in 2003, the year in which his team had already won a Grand Slam when they beat all the other nations in the Six Nations tournament. Johnson also saw his team to two other Six Nations’ titles – a magnificent leader with a win percentage in excess of 80%.
Will Carling became England’s youngest ever captain at the tender age of 22 and he led his side to back-to-back Five Nations Grand Slams in 1991 and 1992 and repeated the feat in 1995. A brave and clever leader with a win percentage of 75.42%.
Bill Beaumont led England to a Grand Slam in 1980 after a barren period of very poor results and one which was totally unexpected. He received 34 England caps which was a record for a lock. He went on to become a well-known TV personality and then a leading Rugby administrator, culminating in his current appointment as Chairman of World Rugby.
England’s most capped players have been Jason Leonard, Rory Underwood, Jonny Wilkinson and Lawrence Dallalagio. Jason was a prop forward who won 114 caps for England and five for the British and Irish Lions which at the time was a record for any player. Jonny played a crucial role through his kicking in the 2003 Grand Slam and in the World Cup where he is remembered for his extra-time drop goal in the final which sealed victory over Australia. Rory is the leading try scorer for England in all representative matches, even switching from left to right wing to include his brother Toby in the team- they became the first brothers to represent England since WW2. Lawrence was capped 85 times in all three positions in the back row and captained England until a drugs scandal brought about his resignation.
