About Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies are an American professional baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. They are currently members of Major League Baseball (MLB)'s National League (NL) West division. Their home venue is Coors Field and their current manager is Walt Weiss. The Rockies have won one National League championship (2007). They mounted a rally in the last month of the 2007 regular season, winning 21 of their final 22 games, and reached the 2007 World Series. However, they were swept by the American League (AL) champion Boston Red Sox in four games.
The reason for the name "Rockies" was due to Denver's proximity to the Rocky Mountains, which is reflected in their logo.
Several previous attempts to bring Major League Baseball to Colorado had failed. There was an attempt In 1958 to form a third league, the Continental, as a rival to the two existing major leagues which would include a team from Denver. This never happened and although there were rumors about first the Pittsburgh Pirates and then the Oakland Athletics relocating to Denver, nothing at all transpired. But fan pressure for local Major League Baseball continued.
The Colorado Baseball Commission was successful in getting Denver voters to approve a 0.1 percent sales tax to help finance a new baseball stadium and a potential ownership group was put together. On July 5, 1991, the National League approved Denver and south Florida as the sites for two expansion teams to begin play in 1993.
Among many prominent players who have featured for the Rockies since 1993 Todd Helton (1997-2009) was one of the best hitters in the first decade of this century. He put together some absolutely monster offensive seasons, even by Rockies standards, as he has hit over .300 in every full season of his career, topping 30 HR every year for a six season span from 1999-2004.
Larry Walker was the best hitter in the game for the seasons 1997-99, as he hit at least .363 in each of those seasons, winning a pair of batting titles in the process. Walker had ia combination of power, speed, a cannon arm, and a personality to match.
Andres Galarraga (1993-1997) compiled some high career stats in a relatively short stay at the Rockies. He was another highly successful slugger, one of the most feared of all time.
Dante Bichette (1993-1999) has been described as an absolute beast at the plate during his time in Colorado, hitting no worse than 21 HR and 89 RBI in any of his seven seasons with the team, and topping 30 HR three times and 100 RBI on five separate occasions.
Vinny Castilla was a staple at the hot corner for the Rockies throughout the 1990s, and from 1995-1999 there was no better offensive third baseman in the game as he averaged .302 BA, 38 HR, 112 RBI over that span and won three Silver Slugger Awards.
