About Brighton & Hove Albion
Part of the name is still a mystery. Over a hundred years of playing football in the south coast of England and nobody really knows why Albion was added to Brighton and Hove to form Brighton and Hove Albion FC. No that it matters, especially not for residents, who love their Seagulls unconditionally.
It all started in 1897, when Brighton United was formed in the city by the shore. Three years later it collapsed and twin town Hove joined in, as another amateur club was established by the name of Brighton and Hove Rangers. This time, it took just one year for the new club to go under. It took a meeting in a local pub to form Brighton and Hove United, which very quickly was changed to Brighton and Hobe Albion due to resistance from a local club by the name United. The year was 1901. The Albion addition remains a question mark to this day.
In 1976 the club first earned its nickname – the Seagulls. It was due to the beginning of a rivalry with Crystal Palace (nicknamed the Eagles) and Brighton fans simply return with “Seagulls” to chants of Palace’s fans “Eagles”. Brighton reached England’s 1st tier for the first time only in 1979, but the stay was short, and the club plumbed back down to lower tiers quickly.
One of Brighton’s biggest moments signaled the end. It was 1983 and the club has already been relegated to 2nd division when he made its way into the FA Cup final. Brighton lost to Manchester United in two games and the free fall started. Brighton fell all the way to Tier 3 in 1987, was able to get promoted for a single season, before off the pitch financial problems threatened to close shop. In 1997 it reached Tier 4 and no solution seemed to be working. To make matters worse, the club’s owner sold Goldstone Ground, the team’s home stadium since 1902, and Brighton had no home field.
Fans were outraged. They organized protests and rallies, walked out of matches in the middle and finally were able to perused a local consortium of businessmen to take control of the club. The slow climb up has started. Building permission was approved in 2007 and a local fan and businessmen put 100 million GBP for construction of a new stadium and took over the club. In 2011, after more than a decade away from home, Albion moved into the new, magnificent Amex -  American Express Community Stadium - which, after two expansion, can host 30,750 fans.
At the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, after more than 30 years, Brighton was promoted back to the Premier League. The amazing journey finally had a happy end.
During its long history, Brighton and Hove Albion had won one just one trophy – the 1910 Charity Shield.
