About Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins are a professional ice hockey team based in Boston, Massachusetts who play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was created in 1924, and thus is the League's third-oldest team and is the oldest in the United States. It is also an Original Six franchise, along with the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Bruins have won six Stanley Cup championships, tied for fourth most of all-time with the Blackhawks and tied second-most of any American NHL team also with the Blackhawks (behind the Red Wings, who have 11). Their home arena is the TD Garden, where they have played since 1995. Prior to 1995, the team played its home games at the Boston Garden for 67 seasons, beginning in 1928.
When choosing a name for the team, the General Manager Art Ross was asked to come up with a nickname that would portray an untamed animal displaying speed, agility, and cunning. Ross came up with "Bruins," an Old English word used for brown bears (from the Dutch "bruin" meaning brown) in classic folk-tales. The team's bearlike nickname also went along with the team's original uniform colors of brown and yellow, which came from the owner’s grocery chain, First National Stores.
Over the years the Bruins have enjoyed a great deal of success. They have won six Stanley Cups (1928–29, 1938–39, 1940–41, 1969–70, 1971–72, 2010–11) , four Conference Championships (1987–88, 1989–90, 2010–11, 2012–13) plus two President’s Trophies and no fewer than 25 Division Championships.
A list of great Bruins players is headed up by Robert Gordon "Bobby" Orr, arguably the greatest hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates. He helped lead the Bruins to two Stanley Cups in 1970 and 1972. He scored both game-winning goals in each Finals. Orr was said to have changed the way a defenseman played the game.
Milt Schmidt played for the Bruins during two different stints. His first stint was from 1936-1942 and his second from 1946-1955. In the intermittent period he enlisted to serve in WW2. He helped lead the Bruins to two Stanley Cups in 1939 and 1941. Schmidt won the Hart Trophy in 1951 and led the NHL in scoring in 1940.
Aubrey Clapper played for the Bruins his entire career from 1927-1947. He was the first NHL player to ever play at least 20 years, finishing his career with 228 goals and 246 assists. Clapper was named to the All Star Game as both a defenseman and a right winger.
Eddie Shore played for the Bruins from 1926-1939. He was one of the Bruins first great defencemen. He won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1929 and 1939 and was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947.
