About Atalanta BC
The city is not so big and can hardly be described as a commercial metropolis. It sits at the base of the Italian Alps and at a driving distance of two and a half hours, away (or less) are Brescia, Verona, Venice, Bologna, Genoa, Turin, and Milan. The team doesn’t have the financial resources to compete with Italy’s elite clubs, so it does the only thing it can, and the only logical thing, although it goes against everything that is taught in professional sports – it doesn’t try to compete for titles, but rather has established the finest youth academy in Italian football.
Atalanta B.C. was established in 1907 in the city of Bergamo, one of the largest cities in the region of Lombardy. The founders were Swiss emigrants, who named their club Foot Ball Club Bergamo. The city has already had one club operating by the name of Atalanta, which comes from Greek mythology. By 1924, both clubs were merged together with a third club, who was dedicated mainly to gymnastics. The black and blue stripe shirts were also a result of the merger.
Atalanta has always held high esteem for its youth ranks. Atalanta’s home-grown players are too many to count. Their names glorify Italian football, both on a national team and club basis. One can almost establish an entire team by choosing players who were brought up in Atalanta’s academy, have made a name for themselves, and were sold for a profit to bigger clubs. For this, there is a price to be paid, only one title – the 1962-63 Coppa Italia – along 114 years of existence and some relegations to Serie B.
The first notable players to graduate from the academy were Piero Gardoni, Franco Nodari, Alfredo Pesenti, and Alessio Domenghini, who went on to become one of Italy’s stronghold on the Mexico 1970 runner up the national team. Next, the club produced what has become Juventus’ and the national team’s two players, that would have formed one of the finest lines of defense ever - Gaetano Scirea and Antonio Cabrini, winners of the 1982 World Cup. Winger Roberto Donadoni was a big part of the great AC Milan teams of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Later on, came Alessio Tacchinardi, who also played for Juventus, and Riccardo Montolivo, who transferred to Fiorentina and then to Milan.
The man behind the youth move movement in Atalanta during the last 25 years is owner Antonio Percassi, who grew up in the team’s academy but has retired at an early age in order to pursue business opportunities. The Bergamo native became the club’s owner in 1990 with academy success and the first team that is built around its graduates in mind. He left in 1994 when the club was relegated but returned in 2010 and has been at the club ever since. During his term, 35 million euros has been invested in the academy.
As of 2014, a global study has placed Atalanta’s youth system 8th in the world, with no less than 25 of its graduates playing in Europe’s top 5 leagues. Another testimony is the fact that between 1991-2014, the club’s youth teams have won no less than 17 national titles.
In accordance, as of 2016, the club is managed by attack-minded Gian Piero Gasperini, who has not only implemented an exciting brand of football but has also turned Atalanta into a European powerhouse. The club under Gasperini qualified to the UEFA Europa League in his first season, repeating the quest a year later, and, after the 2018-19 season qualified for UEFA’s Champions League for the first time in its history.
Atalanta play its home matches in 21,300-seat Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.
