About AS Saint Etienne ( ASSE )
St Etienne (full name Association Sportive de Saint-Étienne Loire) is regarded by many as the most successful football club in France. St Etienne were founded at the end of World War I and plays its home matches at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, located within the city which is in the Loire area of France.
Saint-Étienne has a string of victories in major competitions unmatched by any other club. They have won ten Ligue 1 titles, six Coupe de France titles, a Coupe de la Ligue title and five Trophée des Champions (the French Super Cup). The ten league titles are the most professional league titles ever won by a French club, and they also have chalked up the third highest number of Cup victories. Quite a record!
Having made their first title run in 1956-7, the main run of league success occurred between 1963-64 and 1975-76 with their most recent title in 1980-81. They were also runners up in the European Cup in 1975-6.
Among the famous players who have represented St Etienne are Michel Platini who went on to become President of UEFA – and is expected to run for the top job in FIFA, Jacques Santini who became coach of the French national team, and Laurent Blanc, currently the manager of Paris St-Germain.
Last season St Etienne finished fifth thus qualifying for the Europa League in the coming season. One problem they may encounter is that Max Gradel their leading scorer has just signed for newly promoted Bournemouth in the English Premier League.
