About UFC
One way of dividing people up is their opinion of professional boxing. There are those who regard it as both barbaric and dangerous and a second group who enjoy the sport providing it is properly regulated with especial regard for the health of the boxers. Finally there are those for whom it is just too tame. The members of this third group are most likely to be avid followers of UFC.
UFC is the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It has its origins in the Brazilian full contact sport of Vale Tudo, the UFC started in the USA with very few rules in 1993, and was promoted as a competition to determine the most effective martial art for unarmed combat situations.
What makes a UFC fighter? When they are ready to enter the Octagon they have to be fiercely fit and combative and competent in a wide number of martial arts including Boxing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Freestyle Wrestling Greco Roman Wrestling Jeet Kune Do Judo Kyokushin Karate Muay Thai Sanda/Sanshou and Tae Kwon Do. UFC fighters became well-rounded, balanced fighters who could fight standing or on the floor. This blend of fighting styles and skills became known as mixed martial arts (MMA).
Today, the UFC is the premier organization in MMA and enforces the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts without exception. With more than 40 fights every year, the UFC hosts most of the top-ranked fighters in the world. Events are held not only in America, but in many countries all over the globe. The UFC organization can show a rich history and tradition of competitive MMA dating back to the original Olympic Games in Athens. About 80 years ago, a Brazilian form of MMA known as Vale Tudo (anything goes) sparked local interest in the sport. Today, the UFC has become an organization where hybrid athletes are required to know various disciplines in order to compete at an elite level in a regulated environment where safety is paramount.
This question of safety needs to be emphasised in case any first time spectator is coming along ready for a totally uncontrolled bloodbath. The fighters' safety is top priority. If the ref feels that a fighter is not intelligently defending himself that will be the end of his contest. He will be warned that he must defend himself adequately and if he doesn’t, the fight will be stopped.
How does a UFC fighter win? There are three ways: the most dramatic being a knock out which occurs when a fighter is knocked down and either unconscious, disoriented or unable to intelligently defend himself. The second is a submission when a fighter gets his opponent to submit by using a choke hold or joint lock. Finally if both are standing at the end of the bout, a decision will be reached by three judges appointed by the state in which the fight is taking place.
