Verona offers one of the most magical opera experiences in the world, with performances held under the stars at the iconic Arena di Verona — a Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century. Each summer, thousands of opera lovers gather in this ancient setting to witness spectacular productions of classics like Aida, Carmen, and Turandot. The blend of historic grandeur, powerful music, and the open-air ambiance creates an unforgettable atmosphere that no traditional opera house can match. For those seeking both cultural richness and visual splendor, Verona is an operatic destination not to be missed.
This is a list of just a few of the operatic destinations which music loving travellers should consider when planning future trips. Let’s start with a place that means opera the whole world over La Scala in Milan. The theatre was built in 1778 with four tiers and separate loges, it has become associated with the work of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. A concave channel under the wooden floor of the orchestra gives La Scala superb acoustics.
Even older is the Teatro San Carlo in Naples undoubtedly one of the most beautiful opera houses in Italy and even one of the finest theatres in the world. It was built by King Charles of Bourbon and opened in 1738, this red and gold auditorium is the oldest working theatre to be found anywhere.
London’s Royal Opera House, often referred to by the area in which it is situated, Covent Garden, is the third theatre on its site, the previous two having been destroyed by fires in 1808 and 1856. Its façade and foyer and the auditorium itself all date from 1858 but the remainder of the complex was reconstructed at the end of the last century. George Handel is the composer most associated with Covent Garden as his were the first operas to be performed and many were specially written with the Royal Opera House in mind.
One of the most recognisable artistic centres anywhere in the globe is the Sydney Opera House which juts out into the harbour and is designed to suggest a series of overlapping shells and sails. It was opened in 1973 with a performance of Prokofiev’s War and Peace. Aoustics are aided by a variety of different wooden panels. Even if you are not an opera buff, no visit to Sydney would be complete without visiting this iconic building.
Visit the Place de l’Opera in Paris and you will of course find the Paris Opéra, known as the Palais Garnier, Palais in recognition of its opulent appearance and Garnier after its architect Charles Garnier. It has of course won international recognition as the setting for first the novel and then the musical of “Phantom of the Opera”.
Finally if you find yourself in the “Big Apple” be sure to check out “The Met” at the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts, home to one of the most innovative opera companies anywhere.
Another truly unique operatic experience can be found in Verona, where opera is performed under the stars in the majestic Arena di Verona — a Roman amphitheater dating back to the 1st century. This extraordinary open-air venue hosts some of the grandest productions in the world, with spectacular lighting, sweeping acoustics, and thousands of captivated spectators each night.
