About MLS (soccer)
It is the fourth revelation. And as all signs point up to now, it should turn out to be the biggest, most influential, significantly one-player turnaround Major League Soccer (MLS) has ever experienced. And it's all because, or thanks to, the little fella, wearing a No. 10 jersey.
48 years ago the first coming occurred - the GOAT Pele came to the New York Cosmos. There was no Champions League at the time, nor social media. People either watched Pele play for boyhood club Santos, or leading Brazil to three world cups. His arrival in the USA to play for the North American Soccer League (the old version of the MLS) created a frenzy, and helped import some of the leading stars of the time, such as George Best, Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer. But the league couldn't face the economic hard times and it folded by mid-1980's.
The second coming was due to FIFA 1994 World Cup, to be played for tournament to the United States was the establishment of new league, and hence the creation of the MLS.
Third coming took place in 2007, when a fair-haired guy who was 9and still is) married to a pop star signed for the LA Galaxy. Excitement went sky rocking and Beckham did his thing, creating hype and interest and winning the title with the Galaxy. But a clause in his contract stated that after his playing career is over, he would be able to purchase an MLS franchise for a modest sum of 25 million dollars.
He did. And this led to the fourth coming, that of (maybe) GOAT Leo Messi to Inter Miami. The rest should be history.
29 teams play in the MLS, as St. Louis City SC as the latest addition, starting play at the beginning of the 2023 season. A 30h team, in San Diego, is scheduled to begin playing in the 2025 season. Three of the league's teams are Canadian, the rest are from the United States. This represents a rapid growth for the ten-teams league in its inaugural season of 1996.
The MLS regular season runs from March to October, with each team playing 34 games. The team with the best record is awarded the Supporters' Shield. The post-season includes twelve teams competing in the MLS Cup Playoffs during November and December, culminating in the championship game, the MLS Cup. MLS teams also play in other domestic competitions against teams from other divisions in the U.S. Open Cup and in the Canadian Championship and against continental rivals in the CONCACAF Champions League.
One immense difference from the way football is organized around the world is that in common with other major sporting leagues in North America, such as basketball, baseball, hockey, and American football, MLS has fixed membership. The usual concerns about promotion and relegation play no part in MLS.
Undoubtedly the most successful club in MLS history, since the League has kicked off in 1993, has been LA Galaxy. The franchise is one of the league's most-decorated clubs, having won the MLS Cup five times—more than any other club—and the Supporters' Shield four times along with D.C. United, as well as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup twice, and the old CONCACAF Champions' Cup, making them one of just two MLS teams, along with D.C. United, to win a CONCACAF tournament.
