About Handball World Championship
For the uninitiated, let’s start with a brief description of what exactly handball is!! Handball has been described as a mixture of three other sports: basketball, football and netball. It is played indoors on a court about the size of two basketball courts. At the each end of the court is a net which is 9 feet wide by 6 1/2 feet high. The object of the game is simply to score more goals than the other team.
Each goal counts as 1 point. Usually 20 goals are scored in a game. The games consists of two 30 minute halves with a 10 minute rest period in between the halves. The handball weighs 16 ounces and is about the size of a cantaloupe.
The International Handball Federation is responsible for organising the World Men’s Handball Championship which has been held at varying intervals (except for the War years) since 1938 and since 1993 the Championships have taken place in alternate years.
The first championship was a round robin tournament held in Germany with only four teams and it was not until 1954 that the concept of a championship was revived with six teams and was won by Sweden who defeated West Germany 6-4. Four years later in 1958, the number of nations participating had risen to sixteen and Sweden were again champions, edging out Czechoslovakia 22-12.
1961 saw new winners in the form of Romania with an extremely tight victory in the final over Czechoslovakia 9-8 after two periods of extra time. For some reason the number of teams dipped to 12 which was the lowest point in terms of participation but rose back to 16 in 1964 when Romania had a tight victory over Sweden 25-22. Czechoslovakia came out on top at last in 1967 beating Denmark 14-11, followed by two more victories for Romania in 1970 and 1974.
A single goal separated winners West Germany from the USSR in the 1978 tournament the Soviets were to go one better in 1982 with a three goal victory after extra time over Yugoslavia who were to become champions in the following tournament with Hungary on the wrong end of a 24-22 scoreline.
1990 saw Sweden return as champions for the first time since 1958 when they defeated the USSR 27-23. A newly branded Russia took the crown in 1993 beating new finalists France 28-19 and following what was quite a frequent pattern over the years France emerged victorious in 1995 defeating Croatia 23-19. The next new victor was Croatia in 2003 who were beaten by Spain in 2005. Spain were to win again in 2013, Germany in 2007 whilst France chalked up three more victories in 2009, 2011, and most recently in 2015 when the long exclusivity of European countries in the final was ended with Qatar as the runners-up.
All eyes in the handball world are on Germany and Denmark where the tournament is being held between 10th and 27th January 2019.
