With a tradition of over 100 seasons, (and entering its 101'st season as of 2023 – the league was founded in 1921), the French Basket Ball League Elite - LNB Pro A, or LNB Betclic ELITE, Betclic Elite for commercial reasons – is not only one of Europe's most distinguished and watched basketball leagues, but it has witnessed an honor roll of top players – both with NBA history, or NBA bound – graced its teams along the way.
On October 2022 the NBA has announced that it will start streaming the LNB Betclic ELITE games, both regular season and playoffs, on the NBA app, a testimony for the league's prestige and growing reputation. And, to be more specific, the NBA app will stream all games by Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92, where one, Victor Wembanyama, shows his brilliance. That is, of course, not by mistake, as the 2.19 m' Frenchman is widely expected to be the 1st draft choice in the up-and-coming NBA 2023 draft.
And if we have a good story in the making, why stop here? The president of Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92, known shortly as Metropolitans 92, is none other than Boris Diaw. The power forward, a Pris native, started his career in Pau-Orthez. After two years, he went across the Atlantic and started an illustrious NBA career, first with the Atlanta Hawks, then with the Phoenix Suns and the Charlotte Bobcats. In 2011 Diaw returned to France and played one season with JSA Bordeaux because of the NBA lockout. He went back to the NBA and signed for the San Antonio Spurs and played in Texas for four seasons, reaching the NBA finals in 2013 but loosing to the Miami Heat, but getting the championship ring in 2014 after a victory over the Heat. Diaw played one season with the Utah Jazz before returning to Franch and signing for the Levallois Metropolitans.
Diaw is just one of a long list of current and former NBA players who played in France. Others included: Nicolas Batum (the French started his career at Le Mans Sarthe before moving to the Portland Trail Blazers and today playing for the Los Angeles Clippers) Bruce Bowen of the Heat, Boston Celtics and Spurs Evan Fournier started at Nanterre 92 and Poitiers Basket 86 before signing for the Denver Nuggets and playing for the New York Knicks today) Udonis Haslem (the American won NBA championships in Miami but started his career in Elan Chalon) Michael Ray Richardson (New Jersey Nets, among others, played in Cholet) J.R. Reid (Charlotte, New York and San Antonio, to name just a few, played in Strasbourg and Paris) and, of course the all-time France great Tony Parker, who, during 17 glorious years with San Antonio won no less than four championships.
16 teams play for the Betclic Elite regular season, eight qualify for the playoff. The championship is decided by a best of 5 series. The bottom two teams get relegated to tier B that sends its two best teams to Pro A.
The winniest franchise in Pro A is ASVEL, champion of the last three seasons. The club from a suburb of Lyon has won 21 championships up to date.
