About Argentine Primera Division
Whether we, as football supporters, or scouts from all over the world are aware of it, the next superstar of football is currently playing his trade in the Primera (first) Division of the Argentinian League (or Liga Profesional), where countless names who have graced football stadiums all over the globe over the decades have come from.
The Primera Division was established in 1891 and is the second oldest club competition still running in the world, after England's, which was established in 1888. 28 teams play in Argentina's top division, operating within a single-round basis. League plays run from January to July.
Along over 100 years of operating, the league has gone through numerous changes. through a single-round basis, to two-rounds basis, back to a single round and then to two full league seasons in a calendar year. Currently, the Primera Division include 28 clubs playing a single-round season within the Liga Profesional.
When one speaks of Argentina's football, two names pope up immediately – River Plate and Boca Juniors- the country's and South America's – two legendary football clubs. Up to date, River Plate (which play in white shirts and a red stripe) has won the league a record 37 times. Boca Juniors (blue and yellow shirts) has 35 titles. Racing has 18 championships and Independiente 16.
You won't find Argentina's top players of previous generations among top goal scorers of the Primera Division due to the fact that they tend to leave for Europe at a tender age. The league's top scorer is Paraguay's Arsenio Erico, who played for Nacional and Independiente between 1934-1947 and scored 295 goals.
However, a look at the top goal scorer per season tells a different story: later famous coach Carlos Bianchi won the title in 1970 and 1971 and again in 1981 World cup hero Mario Kempes in 1974 and 1976 Boca's Diego Maradona (1978, 1979, 1980) Hernan Crespo (1994) Javier Saviola (1999) Martín Palermo (1998 and 2007) River Plate's Julian Alvarez won the title in 2021, which earned him a move to Manchester City. And the list goes on and on.
The derby between River Plate and Boca Juniors is among the world's most exciting football matches. Be it at River's 83,214-seat Estadio Monumental, or in Boca's 54,000-seat La Bombonera, the match is all the good people of Buenos Aires (and Argentina's, or around the world, for matter of fact) speak about.
Champions of the Primera Division, as well as the next top ranked teams by the end of the season, get an invitation to play Copa Libertadores.
