About New York City, NY
New York, New York, a helluva town.
The Bronx is up, but the Battery's down.
The people ride in a hole in the groun'.
New York, New York, it's a helluva town!
These words from the opening of the musical “On the Town” were premiered as long ago as 1938 but they are as true today as they were then. Another New York song, made famous by Frank Sinatra, talks of New York as the city that never sleeps. New York is a city perpetually on the move. So much goes on among its “canyons of steel” that any tourist will be spoilt for choice. The best advice is get over there, smell the coffee and feel the buzz. The only problem is that you just won’t want to leave.
New Yorkers love sport, watching sport and talking sport so sports lovers will soon feel at home. Let’s check out some of the great sporting venues you could be visiting during your stay. Baseball is the USA’s no 1 sport and New York has two major league teams, the Yankees, playing in Yankee Stadium and the Mets, in Citi Field. A special event known as the Subway Series allows for regular meetings between the two sides who play the regular season in different leagues.
American Football in New York is represented by the New York Giants and the New York Jets both of whom play out of MetLife Stadium in nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey. New York’s two professional basketball teams are the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks play out of the world famed Madison Square Garden often referred to as the Mecca of Basketball. The Brooklyn Nets are playing in a new and shiny Barclay's center in the heart of Brooklyn.
Soccer, as football is known in the USA, has four teams including the Red Bulls and the Cosmos whilst Ice Hockey has three teams the Devils, the Islanders and the Rangers. Major sporting attractions include the US Open, last of the four tennis Grand Slams held at Flushing Meadow, Queens for two weeks commencing at the end of August the New York City Marathon and the Amateur Boxing Golden Gloves being held at Madison Square Garden each year.
Had enough of sport? There’s so much else – music at the Metropolitan Opera (known as the Met) and Carnegie Hall, a host of theatrical experiences on and off Broadway (Book of Mormon, The Lion King, Wicked, Mama Mia, Matilda, to name a few) – the legendary Great White Way – every kind of eating experience you could possibly imagine and then some more – and as for the shops….
Enjoy your stay in the Big Apple – and allow yourself a few days to catch up on your sleep when you get home!
