About Munich
The would-be traveller to Munich has to look away from what is reprehensible in the past, at another time and in totally other circumstances to comprehend a warm and welcoming city that has so much to offer.
Munich is situated in the State of Bavaria, of which it is both the capital and the largest city, just north of the Bavarian Alps and on the banks of the Isar River. Founded by the Benedictine monks who gave the city its name (“Munichen” literally means “the monks’ place) in early medieval times, Munich is a city that is steeped in history. The fortunate traveller will be able to enjoy a holiday that harmonizes the very old with the most modern.
Four elements dominate the culture (in the broadest sense of the word )of the city. Munich has a deserved reputation for all of them – museums, music, beer and football. The discerning traveller could sample them all in one day – but why not give yourself a few days and take in a lot more?
With museums you will certainly be spoilt for choice. The Deutsches Museum’s speciality is science and technology, reputedly the largest in the world of its kind. Its spectacular setting is on a small island in the Isar River. Allow plenty of time because at the last count there were over 28,000 different objects on display. You should also make time for the Bavarian National Museum, together with the adjoining Bavarian State Archaeological Collection, as well as the Egyptian Museum and the Museum of Five Continents which features artworks and artefacts from outside Europe.
All in all there are more than sixty museums and galleries in Munich consequently careful planning is recommended to ensure that the sites most of interest are given priority.
As for music in Munich, it is renowned as a centre for classical music and many of the world’s greatest soloists and orchestras are regular visitors to the city. You can attend open air events, concerts in historic palaces or an on-going concert programme in the Gasteig Philharmonic Hall. And those whose tastes run to rock music are certainly not neglected as there are many intimate venues with really great performers nearly every night of the week.
Bavaria has become synonymous with beer – the consumption of beer is almost unparalleled. There are no fewer than six breweries in Munich and there are loads of beer gardens and beer halls. Stroll around and decide what is your favourite beer. It’s a great way to spend a holiday!
And last but by no means least football. You just have to get tickets for FC Bayern Munich one of only three European clubs to have won all three European trophies including the Champion’s League. Enjoy!
