About Miami, FL
Miami is an amazingly vibrant buzzing modern city, one of the richest cities in the United States and a world renowned center for tourism, fashion and entertainment. Together with its neighboring municipality, Miami Beach, the image of the area that has gone around the world is of beautiful golden beaches and some of the finest tourist hotels anywhere.
Miami Beach is set on an island, connected to the mainland by several bridges; it is celebrated for its beautiful beaches and for its Art Deco district, reminiscent of the thirties, with pastel colored historic buildings, especially along Ocean Drive. The most popular beach is South Beach while Ocean Drive is an amazing “drive along” experience by day or especially at night with the lights on the Art Deco buildings.
Miami is of course absolutely stock full of tourist attractions and among those that should be on everyone’s list, if you can tear yourself away from the beach, are the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a 28-acre estate and Italian Renaissance-style villa filled with European furniture and decorative arts from the 15th to 19th century. Animal lovers won’t want to miss out on the Zoo, Jungle Island or the Miami Seaquarium and there are three great museums – the Children’s Museum, the Science Museum and the Gold Coast Railroad.
There’s plenty in Miami for the sports fans as well. You can pick from two major league baseball teams the Miami Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays, two NBA basketball teams (Orlando Magic and Miami Heat), and three NFL teams (Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers). For motor racing devotees, the nearby Daytona International Speedway is the home amongst other attractions of the Daytona 500, the most prestigious race in NASCAR.
Miami has music for every conceivable taste ranging from Latin, Afro-Cuban, jazz, rock, reggae, classical, dance music and more. America’s leading orchestral academy the New World Symphony performs at the New World Center on Miami Beach – designed by Frank Gehry. The city also plays host to the Florida Grand Opera, the seventh oldest opera company in North America.
Holidaymakers like to eat and thousands find their way to the Calle Ocho, the main road through Little Havana, Miami’s Cuban quarter, which specializes in Cuban cuisine. But throughout the city there’s something to satisfy each taste bud.
