About Berlin
Berlin as a city has been at the heart of some of the most memorable historic events of the twentieth century and stands today as a place that represents the eventual triumph of decency and the human spirit above tyranny, despotism and horror. This reunited city has so much to offer the tourist and casual visitor.
The symbol that most people think of in Berlin is the Brandenburg Gate which for so many years epitomised the division between East and West Berlin and has now become an iconic symbol of reunification of the city that is now the capital as well as its undoubted cultural center.
Berlin has many special places to interest any visitor. For example, you could spend a day on Museum Island which has no fewer than five major museums in close proximity. You can explore the often traumatic Jewish history of Berlin in the Jewish Museum and visit the Holocaust Museum – both examples of striking modern architecture. There’s still a small piece of the Berlin Wall to enable you to remember the bad old days when the city was cut in two and Checkpoint Charlie, once the border crossing featured in innumerable spy films, is now a tourist center.
You can pay homage to Berlin’s once very distinctive architecture in the Bauhaus Museum and if you want to take in a panorama of the entire city from one of its most famous buildings, book to go up on the roof of the Reichstag (the German parliament).
Music lovers are well catered for by the world famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and no fewer than six other symphony orchestras and three major opera houses. It is estimated that the city has more than forty theaters and stages.
Whereas Berlin does not have any outstanding sports teams, in comparison to other German cities, it is known as a venue for international sport such as the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Championships while the Berlin Marathon and the ISTAF are landmarks in the athletics year.
The fact that the Berlin Olympics of 1936 was overshadowed by its association with the Nazi regime should not blind us to the architectural significance of the Olympic Stadium (Olympiastadion Berlin) which is now the home both of German athletics and of Hertha BSC, the city’s premier football club, a founding member of the German Football Association playing in the Bundesliga.
We haven’t mentioned the shopping or the cuisine or the exuberance always associated with this iconic city – we invite you to waste no time in finding out for yourself!
