About NHL Playoffs
The NHL (Stanley Cup) playoffs has for long been the way that the winners of the National Hockey League emerge right back to 1917. The playoffs in the National Hockey League are of four rounds of a best-of-seven series. Eight teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs based the points that they have acquired during the season. . The final round is commonly known as the Stanley Cup Finals, which sees the two conference champions play for the Stanley Cup.
The NHL has always used a playoff tournament to determine its champion. Its playoff system has changed over the years, from the league's 1917 beginning when Stanley Cup ownership was a shared one between different leagues, until 1926 when the NHL took over the Cup right up to current arrangements.
The playoffs are now at a crucial place and we will review each of the matchups taking place. Two have been decided and the other two are poised.
The Eastern Conference sees Montreal Canadians against Tampa Bay Lightning. With two out of the seven games to play, the Lightning lead the series 3-2 having originally led 3-0. The Montreal team have bounced back with one emphatic and one close victory (6-2, 2-1) so there will be a lot of anxious faces on both sides at the two remaining matches. The series between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals is in an even more fraught situation, being tied at 3-3. However the momentum is quite clearly with the Rangers team who have won the last two matches and have home advantage for the decider.
By contrast the identity of both semi-finalists in the Western Conference are known. Minnesota Wild have dismissed Chicago Blackhawks with a straight four wins on the trot and the final team to progress will be the Anaheim Ducks who have overcome the Calgary Flames by a 4-1 margin.
We can now look forward to an exciting culmination of a hard-fought series of matches.
